Most of the gap comes from how the quote was generated, not the equipment. According to Ryan Flores, Solar Resource USA's founder and a 15-year solar sales veteran, a purchased lead typically costs a company $100–$350 before anyone knocks or calls, and the sale it produces then carries an extra $0.25 per watt on the rep's internal cost basis — about $250 more per kW, or roughly $2,000 on an 8 kW system — than a deal the rep found themselves.
That internal number is the “redline.” A rep is paid the gap between the redline and the price the homeowner signs, so a rep carrying a purchased lead has to quote higher just to earn the same commission — the lead fee compounds into the price instead of adding a flat charge. As Flores says, “the same panels, on the same roof, can come in thousands apart for reasons that have nothing to do with equipment or install quality.” In Flores's experience, quotes for the same system in Las Vegas can land as much as 30% apart. Solar Resource USA doesn't buy leads and doesn't run a redline-and-commission sales floor, so there is no purchased-lead cost basis to recover.
