Most backup systems are grid-following — they need an existing AC signal to lock onto. If the grid is gone, they shut down. The Powerwall 3 is different. It's a grid-forming inverter, which means it doesn't wait for the utility to provide a voltage reference.

Your lights, outlets, fridge, Wi-Fi, and all backed-up loads keep running because the battery is actively forming and controlling the electrical backbone of the home. It regulates voltage, manages frequency, and handles load changes in real time — the same job the utility grid was doing, just now done entirely from your garage.

The Tesla app gives you a live view of your entire home energy system — solar production, home consumption, battery charge level, and grid status — all in one dashboard. It updates in real time, so you always know exactly what your system is doing and why.

You also get full control over how the system behaves. Set a minimum battery reserve — say, keep it at 20% — and the system will prioritize that for outage protection while letting solar handle everything else during the day. Want to go fully off-grid for a weekend? One tap. The "Go Off-Grid" feature in the app lets you disconnect from the utility entirely and run on solar and battery as often as you want — and in certain use cases, can keep your home running for weeks.

There's no utility portal, no call to the power company, no waiting. You are the grid operator now — and the interface is intuitive enough that most homeowners understand their full system within the first day of having it.

Here's where it gets genuinely impressive. Because the Powerwall 3 is grid-forming, it can give your solar system a live AC environment to lock onto during an outage. In a standard outage with a standard backup system, your solar panels shut off too — because they have no grid signal to reference.
