What Actually Happens When the Power Goes Out in Las Vegas

Outages here are rarer than the U.S. average. But a summer outage in Las Vegas is a heat event, not a lighting problem — and the things you assume keep working because they're "not electric" (water pressure, sewer pumps, gas pumps, cell towers, garage doors) all depend on electricity somewhere.

The 30-Second Version

The grid here is more reliable than average. The average Nevada Power customer went without electricity for 72.99 minutes in all of 2024, across 0.66 interruptions, per EIA Form 861 reliability data — against a U.S. average of about 11 hours.

The risk is duration in heat, not frequency. Air conditioning stops the instant the grid does. The Southern Nevada Health District counted 284 heat-associated deaths in Clark County in 2025 and 513 in 2024 — without any blackout involved.

Most of what you assume is "not electric" is. Water keeps flowing for a while on gravity from reservoir storage; gravity sewer mains keep draining; cell towers run on batteries with no federal minimum; gas stations cannot pump; garage doors open by hand. The table below sorts every system into stops instantly, lasts hours, or lasts days.

Does Las Vegas Get Power Outages?

Yes — but less often, and for less time, than almost anywhere else in the country. In 2024 the average Nevada Power customer lost electricity for 72.99 minutes across 0.66 interruptions, according to the reliability file of EIA Form 861, against a U.S. average of about 11 hours.

That U.S. figure was the worst in a decade because of Hurricanes Beryl, Helene and Milton, which the U.S. Energy Information Administration says accounted for roughly 80% of the hours Americans spent without electricity in 2024. Strip major events out of the Nevada Power number and it falls to 51.58 minutes. In plain terms, a typical Las Vegas household sees one outage every year and a half, lasting well under two hours, per the same EIA file.

Wind is the exception. On July 1, 2025 a microburst with winds near 70 mph knocked out service to roughly 30,000 customers; NV Energy spokesperson Meghin Delaney told the Las Vegas Review-Journal "more than 60 damaged poles" were involved, and full restoration took until July 4. That is the shape of a Las Vegas outage that matters: not the hour-long equipment failure, but the three-day pole-replacement job in the middle of summer.

The 2026 record so far reads like the small end of that scale. Per FOX5 Vegas reports, an April 17 windstorm cut power to 2,624 customers; a July 23 fault near Sahara and Valley View took out more than 2,500 for about an hour and forty-seven minutes; and on the evening of August 1 an underground equipment failure near Durango Drive and Warm Springs Road left 2,596 customers in the 89148 ZIP code dark, per FOX5 Vegas. For the current outage picture, use NV Energy's outage map, not a news search.

On the supply side, NERC's 2026 Summer Reliability Assessment rates the WECC-Southwest region, which includes Southern Nevada, at Normal risk, with a 48.1% anticipated reserve margin, per NERC. WECC's companion report, per WECC, notes peak demand is projected to rise 10% while resource capacity rises 33%, and flags "reliability concerns posed by large loads if new generation resources are delayed." "Normal" is the honest word for Nevada as of September 2026 — not "elevated."

What Stops Instantly, What Lasts Hours, and What Lasts Days

Everything in a Las Vegas home sorts into three buckets when the grid drops: systems that stop the same second (air conditioning, Wi-Fi, garage-door motors, gas-station pumps, traffic signals), systems that coast on stored cold or stored charge for hours (refrigerators, freezers, cell towers, medical-device batteries, insulin), and systems that ride on stored water or gravity for days (municipal water pressure, gravity sewer mains). The bucket a system lands in is set by physics and by rules — the FDA's 28-day window for unrefrigerated insulin, FoodSafety.gov's four-hour refrigerator limit, the Federal Communications Commission's decision not to mandate any backup-power minimum at cell sites, the Las Vegas Valley Water District's gravity-fed reservoir design.

The table uses only published figures; where an operator does not publish a number, the cell says so rather than guessing.

What Happens to Your House in the First Hour of a Summer Outage?

The air conditioning stops the instant the grid does, and in a Las Vegas July the house itself becomes the hazard. The Southern Nevada Health District counted 284 heat-associated deaths in Clark County in 2025 and 513 in 2024 — and none of those years featured a major blackout.

Per the Southern Nevada Health District's final heat reports for each year, 2025 was a 45% decrease from 2024, with 2,217 heat-related emergency-department visits and the peak for both visits and deaths landing in August. Heat kills here with the grid up. What a blackout does is remove the one thing standing between an August afternoon and the inside of your home.

The peer-reviewed estimate of that scenario is stark. Brian Stone Jr. and colleagues, writing in Environmental Science & Technology in May 2023, modeled a multi-day blackout during a heat wave in three U.S. cities and concluded, per the published study, that it would require medical attention for "between 3% (Atlanta) and more than 50% (Phoenix) of the total urban population" and "more than double the estimated rate of heat-related mortality." Phoenix is the analog to use for Las Vegas: same desert climate, same dependence on air conditioning. This page does not publish a "your house hits X degrees in Y hours" number, because no local agency has measured one and an invented figure would be worse than none.

The danger isn't the dark. It's the thermostat you can't turn down.

In the first hour, practically: the fans and the fridge go quiet, the thermostat screen goes black, the garage door will not lift on its own, and any cable or fiber phone line is already dead. If the outage lands during an excessive heat warning, Clark County's Beat the Heat SNV cooling stations are open — the county activates them when the Las Vegas office of the National Weather Service issues an excessive heat warning, "generally from the hours of 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.," with locations through 2-1-1. Note what triggers them: a heat warning, not an outage. A blackout on a 104°F day with no warning in effect does not open a cooling station. Nevada's Office of Emergency Management adds the obvious line most people skip: "Check with local officials about heating and cooling locations open near you."

Does Water Still Work When the Power Goes Out in Las Vegas?

Usually, yes — for a while. Most of the Las Vegas Valley is gravity-fed from 84 reservoir basins and tanks that together hold nearly a billion gallons, so a power outage does not immediately stop water at the tap, according to the Las Vegas Valley Water District.

Here is the mechanic, in the district's own description: treated Lake Mead water is pumped uphill to reservoirs around the valley, mostly at night; 55 pumping stations push it into transmission mains; and "finally, gravity delivers water through distribution pipelines to your home or business." That last leg — more than 7,300 miles of pipe serving more than 450,000 homes and businesses — is the part that keeps working when the pumps do not. A 2023 LVVWD feature in Nevada Business Magazine put it plainly: "a power outage won't cause an immediate water service interruption." The Southern Nevada Water Authority has also said it keeps groundwater wells "in readiness mode in case they're needed."

What the district does not publish is how many hours that storage lasts in an extended, valley-wide outage, or which pumping stations have generators. So the honest answer is hours to days, not minutes, and not forever. Pressure at your tap "varies, depending on the elevation of your property in relation to the elevation of the reservoir," between about 30 and 100 psi per LVVWD — which is why, as a matter of plain hydraulics rather than any agency statement, the highest-elevation neighborhoods and high-rise buildings that rely on electric booster pumps lose pressure first. Henderson homes are on the City of Henderson's own water system, with the same gravity principle. If you are on a private well in Pahrump, Kingman or Golden Valley, the answer is different: the well pump is electric and stops with the grid.

The preparation is cheap. The Southern Nevada Health District's standing advice is "one gallon of bottled drinking water per person, per day," and Ready.gov says to plan that for several days. Filling a bathtub at the start of a long outage — the old advice that shows up in every search — is for flushing and washing, not drinking.

Can You Flush the Toilet When the Power Is Out?

Yes, if your street drains by gravity to a sewer main — which is most of Las Vegas. The risk is a home served by a sewer lift station in a long outage: when the station's pumps stop, wastewater can back up into homes.

A lift station, in Clark County's definition, is "an underground facility containing submersible pumps, designed to pump (or lift) wastewater from a lower elevation" so it can rejoin a gravity main. The county's guidance for private lift stations notes that when flow is obstructed it "backs up and can surface through a lift station, manhole, or clean-out." The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's 2023 Power Resilience Guide states the outage case directly:

"Pump failure may lead to direct discharge of untreated sewage to rivers and streams or sewage backup into homes and businesses." U.S. EPA, Power Resilience Guide for Water and Wastewater Utilities, 2023

King County, Washington's public-works page gives the household rule for pump-dependent areas: "If you continue to use water by flushing toilets, washing dishes, or taking showers during a power outage, sewage may back up into the house!" The local translation: the Clark County Water Reclamation District and the cities run the large stations, and most subdivisions drain by gravity, so the answer to "how long" is a long time for most addresses and check first for anyone whose subdivision has its own private lift station or a home ejector pump. Neither CCWRD nor the cities publish generator coverage per station, so this page will not claim a number. Septic homes on the outskirts: a gravity septic tank keeps accepting waste; a pump-up system does not.

What About Insulin, CPAP, Oxygen — and Food?

Insulin is the clock. The FDA's emergency guidance says insulin in manufacturer vials or cartridges "may be left unrefrigerated at a temperature between 59°F and 86°F for up to 28 days and continue to work" — and an un-air-conditioned Las Vegas house passes 86°F on a summer afternoon.

The same FDA page sets the normal range at 36°F to 46°F, says "Do not use insulin that has been frozen," and adds that insulin sitting in a pump's infusion set should be discarded after 48 hours, or immediately if it has been above 98.6°F. The practical reading for Southern Nevada: a refrigerator holds its cold for roughly four hours with the door shut, and after that the insulin needs a cooler with ice — never touching the ice — for as long as the house is above 86°F.

For powered devices, the FDA's advice is to "notify your electric company and fire department to let them know you have a medical device that needs power." NV Energy's version of that registry is the Green Cross Program, and its application form (updated January 2026) is unusually candid about what enrollment does and does not do:

Green Cross gives you "advance notifications of scheduled interruptions (planned outages)" and shares your address with first responders during emergencies; for anyone on life-support equipment who "cannot be without power for any reason," NV Energy itself "recommends developing alternate care plans." The American Lung Association's guidance for oxygen users is stand-alone tanks that do not rely on electricity; for CPAP, a battery backup or a car adapter. None of that is exotic. It is just something to buy in March rather than discover in July.

Food is the easy one. Per FoodSafety.gov, a closed refrigerator keeps food safe for up to 4 hours; a full freezer holds for approximately 48 hours (24 if half-full); and anything that has been at 40°F or above for more than two hours gets thrown out. Nevada's Office of Emergency Management repeats the same numbers, and adds: "When in doubt, throw it out!"

Will My Phone, Wi-Fi and 911 Still Work?

Your cell phone works as long as the nearest tower's batteries do — and there is no federal minimum for how long that is. Home Wi-Fi and any cable or fiber phone line stop the moment the router loses power, unless you bought the battery backup unit your provider is required to offer.

On the towers: the FCC adopted backup-power rules in 2007, and they were vacated. In its 2021 order on network resiliency (FCC 21-99) the commission was still asking, "How many hours of on-site backup power would be appropriate," and instead relies on the carriers' voluntary framework, whose first commitment is to "provide roaming to one another when a network is down, where technically feasible." Carriers do not publish site-level battery hours, so this page does not invent one. What you can do: keep a charged power bank, text instead of calling when networks are congested, and know that a 911 call from a cell phone "always tries cellular service first," per Verizon's Wi-Fi calling FAQ, even in Airplane Mode.

On the home line: the FCC's consumer guide says it flat — "If your power is out or your internet connection is down, be aware that your VoIP service may not work." Under 47 CFR 9.20, adopted October 2015, providers of fixed residential voice service that is not line-powered must offer a backup option "capable of 8 hours of standby power" and, since 2019, a 24-hour option, at the subscriber's expense. CenturyLink's Las Vegas customer page says its connected-voice service "will not work in the event of a power outage unless you have a battery backup unit (BBU)." The Southern Nevada Health District's tip to keep "a regular (not cordless) phone" only helps on a true copper line, which most valley homes no longer have.

Gas Stations, Traffic Lights, Garage Doors, Gates and Elevators

None of them work without electricity, and each has a rule. Gas pumps stop; dark signals become four-way stops under Nevada law; garage doors open by hand; gates push open; and elevators stop where they are unless the building has standby power.

Gas stations

"Gas tanks cannot be refilled at a gas station during a power outage," the Southern Nevada Health District says, with the corollary "Minimize driving to conserve fuel." Florida requires generators at fuel stations along evacuation routes (Fla. Stat. 526.143); Nevada has no generator requirement for gas stations that we could find in NRS chapters 590 or 597. Keep the tank above half in summer. It costs nothing.

Traffic signals

Nevada Revised Statute 484B.250(4) covers a signal that is "inoperative at the time the vehicle enters the intersection": "the driver of the vehicle shall proceed as if a stop sign had been erected at each entrance to the intersection." The Regional Transportation Commission's FAST center manages more than 1,671 signals across the valley, per RTC's 2024 traffic-management page; a wide outage turns every one of them into a four-way stop at once, which is why the drive to a cooling station takes longer than it should.

Garage doors and gates

The Door & Access Systems Manufacturers Association's technical data sheet on exiting through the garage in an outage (TDS #385) says to "locate the manual disconnect which is a red handle hanging from a cord" roughly six feet above the floor, pull it to free the door from the opener, and lift by hand — with a warning about "stored tension in the door counterbalance system," meaning a door with a broken spring is heavy and should be left alone. Community gates are designed to fail safe, "allowing the gate to be manually pushed open," per DoorKing's emergency-access guidance. Find your red handle today, with the lights on.

Elevators

Without standby power, "the elevator will automatically stop where it is," as Southern California Edison's rider guidance puts it. Buildings that do have standby power follow ASME A17.1-2019 §2.27.2.4.5, which Nevada's Division of Industrial Relations enforces through its emergency-power checklist: the system must "automatically select one or more elevators to recall to the designated level." If you live above the fourth floor in a Las Vegas high-rise, the two questions to ask management now are whether the building has a standby generator, and whether it covers the domestic water booster pumps as well as the elevator — because a tower with a working elevator and no water pressure is still a tower you leave.

Do Solar Panels Work During a Power Outage in Las Vegas?

No — not without a battery. Tesla's own support page says it in one sentence: "A traditional solar system without a Powerwall does not function during a grid outage." NV Energy's Solar FAQ agrees: "If the solar system is not designed to operate with a backup power system, then it will not continue to work during a power outage."

The reason is a safety rule, not a defect. A grid-tied inverter is required to shut down when the grid drops so it cannot energize lines that utility crews are working on (anti-islanding), and the National Electrical Code's rapid-shutdown requirement, Article 690.12, de-energizes the array conductors on the roof. Solar produces in an outage only when a battery and a transfer device — a Backup Switch or Gateway — island the house first. Generator or Battery?

Both keep the air conditioning, refrigerator and Wi-Fi running through a Las Vegas outage. The differences are carbon monoxide, fuel, noise and attention — and every one of them is documented.

Carbon monoxide. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates "about 85 consumers die in the U.S. each year from CO poisoning from portable generators," and its rule is a generator "at least 20 feet away from the house" and never "inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace or shed." Nevada OEM adds "Let the generator cool before refueling." A battery produces no exhaust, which is the whole of that comparison.

Fuel. A Generac GP3500iO carries a 2.37-gallon tank and runs 8.0 hours at 50% load, per its owner's manual — arithmetic that works out to roughly 7 gallons a day if you run it around the clock, a figure this page derives and labels as an estimate. Put that next to the Health District's line about gas stations, and a portable generator in a three-day outage is a fuel-logistics problem. A home battery recharges from the roof.

Noise. Honda rates the EU2200i inverter generator at 57 dB(A) at rated load; Generac's Guardian 22 kW standby unit is rated at 67 dB(A) at 23 feet. Tesla's Powerwall 3 datasheet lists operating noise at "< 50 db(A) typical" — fan noise under load, silence otherwise. For scale, the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders puts normal conversation at 60–70 dBA. Police in Florida and residents in Puerto Rico have reported generator thefts after extended outages; the observation that a silent battery on the garage wall does not advertise that your house has power is this article's own reasoning, not a study finding.

Can a battery actually start the air conditioner? Usually, for one unit. Powerwall 3 is rated at 13.5 kWh of storage, 11.5 kW continuous output, and a load-start capability of 185 LRA, per Tesla's 2025 datasheet. A common 4-ton residential condenser (Goodman GSX140481) lists a locked-rotor amperage of 109 A and roughly 4.5–4.9 kW running; a 3-ton unit about 77 A and 3.3–3.5 kW. Both start well under 185 LRA. Tesla still advises reducing "energy-intensive appliances like air conditioners" in an outage, and two numbers on the same datasheet matter more in Southern Nevada than anywhere else: the unit is rated to operate up to 122°F, and "performance may be de-rated at operating temperatures above 40°C (104°F)" — so a west-facing garage wall in August is the wrong place to mount it. Runtime is a per-house estimate, not a spec: 13.5 kWh feeding a 4-ton compressor drawing about 4.7 kW gives roughly three hours of continuous cooling with nothing else on, longer as the compressor cycles, and longer again once solar recharges the battery after sunrise. What a Home Battery Does — and Doesn't — Cover

A battery you own, or whose Backup Reserve you control, keeps the circuits it is wired to running — air conditioning included, within its power rating — and recharges from solar the next morning. It does not restore water pressure, cell towers, gas pumps or traffic signals, and it does not cover any circuit it is not wired to.

Two settings decide how much is there when the grid drops. Tesla's Backup Reserve "allows you to determine how much of your Powerwall's stored energy will automatically be saved for backup power," set by the homeowner in the app; Storm Watch, when a severe-weather alert is issued, means the "Powerwall will charge to maximum capacity to automatically maximize your protection from grid outages." As of September 2026, NV Energy has proposed — in its 2026 Integrated Resource Plan — but not launched a program that would dispatch home batteries on the utility's signal; today you control your reserve in the app. If a battery comes wrapped into a subscription or power-purchase agreement, get in writing who sets the reserve and whether the system owner can enroll it in a utility program without your consent. That is the one contract question that decides whether "backup" means your backup.

On the bill side, the only mechanic worth stating is the one NV Energy publishes: under its tiered net metering, exported solar earns "a credit equal to at least 75 percent of the retail consumption rate," so energy you store and use yourself is worth about a third more than energy you export — and batteries "require advance review and approval by NV Energy," per the Solar Generations handbook. What the Government Just Said About the Grid — and Why It Doesn't Change Your Plan

On August 26, 2026 the President signed Executive Order 14421 (91 FR 55995), declaring a national emergency over foreign equipment in the bulk-power system — the transmission-scale grid, 69 kV and up. It does not touch residential rooftop solar, bans no equipment today, and has nothing to do with windstorms. It is a supply-chain policy, and a separate explainer will cover what it means for a Nevada homeowner; nothing about it changes the table above.

What the last month did show is the shape of a bad outage elsewhere. A derecho with 99 mph winds hit northwest Indiana on August 11; NIPSCO, per NBC Chicago, called it "the largest outage event documented in NIPSCO's history, affecting approximately 60% of our electric customers at its peak," and the last homes in Gary waited about two weeks. On August 23 an underground vault fire cut power to 22,066 Southern California Edison customers in Long Beach during extreme heat, per SCE — the heat-outage analog, restored by the next day. In Hawaii, Tropical Storm Lala's August 15–16 outages left 197,400 customers dark and Hawaiian Electric warning of "extended outages lasting weeks or even months in the hardest hit rural areas." And in southern Utah on June 26–27, Rocky Mountain Power de-energized more than 11,000 customers in a planned wildfire safety shutoff, per the utility's own release. Four events, four causes, one common variable: duration. Nevada's grid is rated Normal risk. Its summer is not.
