Strip out major-event days and the number falls to 51.58 minutes, per the same EIA file. The U.S. average that year was about 11 hours, which the U.S. Energy Information Administration calls the worst in a decade — Hurricanes Beryl, Helene and Milton accounted for roughly 80% of those hours, per EIA.
In plain terms, a typical Las Vegas household sees one outage every year and a half, lasting just under two hours. NV Energy's Nevada Power division serves roughly 1.09 million customers in Southern Nevada, per the same EIA file, so even a rare event touches a lot of homes at once.
Supply is not the weak point either. NERC's 2026 Summer Reliability Assessment rates the WECC-Southwest region, which includes Southern Nevada, at normal risk with a 48.1% anticipated reserve margin — the cushion between expected peak demand and the resources available to meet it. Of the eight Western subregions, only the Northwest carries an elevated designation this summer, per NERC.
The grid here rarely fails. The question is what happens in the hours when it does.
The real risk is a summer outage during extreme heat, not a frequent one. Heat is the deadliest weather in Clark County in an ordinary year: the Southern Nevada Health District counted 284 heat-associated deaths in 2025, a 45% decrease from the 513 recorded in 2024 — and every one of those years had electricity.
An outage removes the air conditioning that stands between a Las Vegas house and that heat.
Duration is the other half of the risk. The valley's worst recent outage was wind, not supply: on July 1, 2025 a microburst with winds near 70 mph knocked out service to roughly 30,000 customers and damaged more than 60 poles, per NV Energy statements reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, and the last homes were restored on July 4, per KTNV (both in the sources at the end of this page). Three days without air conditioning in July is a different event from ninety minutes in March.

Not this summer, according to the regulators who model it. WECC's 2026 Summer Reliability Assessment projects Southwest peak demand up 10% and anticipated resource capacity up 33% since last summer's forecasts, per WECC — supply additions, mostly solar and batteries, are outrunning demand for now. The caution is about timing:
"The subregion faces grid reliability concerns posed by large loads if new generation resources are delayed as new load comes online." — WECC, 2026 Summer Reliability Assessment: Western Overview (feature.wecc.org)
"Large loads" is regulator language for data centers and industrial campuses that connect in hundreds of megawatts at a time. The concern is not that Nevada runs short this year; it is that a data center can be built in two years and a power plant or transmission line takes longer, so the two can fall out of step. Solar panels alone do not keep the power on. NV Energy's own solar FAQ puts it plainly: "If the solar system is not designed to operate with a backup power system, then it will not continue to work during a power outage," because grid-tied systems must shut off under the IEEE 1547 anti-islanding standard, per NV Energy.
Solar runs a house through an outage only when a battery and transfer equipment isolate the home from the grid and give the inverter a stable signal to follow.
A battery does two separate jobs in Las Vegas, and it is worth keeping them apart. The first is backup: stored energy for the hours the grid is down, sized to what you actually need to run. The second is economic, and it has nothing to do with outages: under NV Energy's tiered net metering, a new residential solar customer sits in Tier 4, where exported surplus earns a credit of 75% of the retail rate, locked for 20 years, per the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada. Power used at home is worth 100% of retail; power exported is worth 75%. A battery narrows that gap by storing midday solar for the evening. On August 26, 2026 the President signed Executive Order 14421, declaring a national emergency over foreign-made equipment in the U.S. bulk-power system — the high-voltage transmission and generation layer, not the wiring in a house. As of September 10, 2026 the order bans nothing in a Las Vegas home.
On September 9, 2026 the Department of Energy opened a request for information (91 FR 57322) on how to implement it, with responses due October 9, 2026, per the Federal Register. The DOE notice explicitly asks industry where the line should sit for grid-connected inverters and battery systems — so the rooftop question is open, not answered.
